Scope of Works:

This school will comply with the Living Building Challenge, one of most rigorous sustainability standards in industry as it requires net positive energy, waste and water (see link below for more info)

Sustainable implementations:

  • Avoid the use of concrete by implementing more timber and steel
  • 400mm thick rammed earth walls
  • Rammed earth clay floors
  • Reduce cement where concrete unavoidable by replacing cement with fly ash (also reduces cement content in the rammed earth walls)
  • Lime plaster and mortar where using conventional brickwork
  • Gabion retaining walls
  • Timber cladding and dekriet (latte type ceiling) as opposed to standard ceilings
  • Earth tubes complemented by compost heating for thermal comfort within classrooms
  • Water sources – bore holes, dams and rain water harvesting
  • Water treatment plant
  • Waste water treatment plant
  • Solar panels and large storage batteries – 105% of energy requirement to be provided via renewable energy
  • Sub-metering for each building and individual meters within each building
